Elk County Freshwater Association

In fall of 2005, a group of concerned citizens asked if any improvements could be made to the water quality in the area. These individuals decided to form a group to actively improve aquatic habitat in local streams. To get started the first formal meeting was held in January 2006 and a board of directors and officers were established.

Big Mill Creek Watershed was chosen as the first project site due to the acid deposition problems it is facing. A consultant was hired and partnerships have been established with the Allegheny National Forest, Elk County Conservation District, Department of Environmental Protection, and other local organizations.

The ECFA is currently monitoring the Big Mill Creek Watershed, and is working with the consultant to design a treatment system that would neutralize the acidic deposition entering the Big Mill Creek and its tributaries. The group is working with charitable organizations, agencies and partners to raise the money needed to finish this multi-phase project.

ECFA is also working on stream improvement projects around the county.
